The Niagara Gateway Project
Breathing New Life into the Extraordinary Significance of Niagara-on-the-Lake: The Niagara Gateway invites people from near and far to explore the deep significance of the Niagara region. This proposal offers a space to integrate the town’s rich heritage, vibrant cultural life, and commitment to community and environmental sustainability. Led by the James A. Burton & Family Foundation (JABFF), this project provides a thoughtful, community-driven solution to support the town’s growth and quality of life.
Why the Niagara Gateway Project? The Niagara region and Niagara-on-the-Lake have brought people together for centuries. The Niagara Gateway builds on that legacy by increasing community engagement, especially for seniors seeking meaningful engagement opportunities, families looking for accessible educational and community based programs, and residents who value diverse cultural experiences. Residents and visitors can immerse themselves in the region’s natural landscapes through outdoor programs, from nature walks along Indigenous trails to eco-tourism initiatives. The Gateway will also host a wide range of indoor cultural and educational activities, including performances, workshops, and wellness programs that celebrate the town’s rich history and creative spirit.

The project is built around place and people. The JABFF has been engaged in several wonderful relationships in the region that provided great insight into the community, and what this extraordinary place can grow into.
Who is Behind the Niagara Gateway? A coalition of respected partners and collaborators is driving the Niagara Gateway. The James A. Burton & Family Foundation leads the project, with contributions from cultural and environmental organizations such as the Shaw Festival Theatre, Plenty Canada, the Royal Oak Community School, and the Niagara Parks Commission. These collaborators bring expertise in arts, Indigenous and heritage knowledge, sustainability, and tourism, ensuring that the Gateway will provide a range of high-quality programs and experiences for the community. Their involvement guarantees that the Gateway will be a resource that reflects the values and priorities of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
A Vision of NOTL Tomorrow by Planning Today
The Niagara Gateway is an opportunity to shape the future of Niagara-on-the-Lake. It respects the town’s heritage, fosters creativity, deepens community connections, and attracts tourists from near and far. By supporting this project, we hope to create a space to inspire learning, promote wellness, and preserve our environment for residents and visitors to the community. What the Niagara Gateway Offers The Gateway will be a versatile space with educational, cultural, and wellness programs. These programs will be accessible to people of all ages, offering opportunities to learn, participate in the arts, and engage with the region’s environmental and historical assets. The site’s adaptive reuse will honour the building’s historic value, while modern updates ensure it meets today’s environmental and accessibility standards. The Gateway’s programs will address the community’s physical and mental wellness needs, as well as lifelong learning and social engagement.
How the Niagara Gateway Will Be Realized
The adaptive reuse of the former hospital at 176 Wellington will allow the Niagara Gateway to meet cultural and environmental objectives. The project will integrate energy-efficient systems and sustainable design features that minimize ecological impact while revitalizing a historic building. The project will be funded through public grants, private donations, and community partnerships. Extensive consultations with local organizations and residents have shaped the planning process to date to ensure that the Gateway meets Niagara-on-the-Lake's evolving needs.
